How to Use Visio to Create ERD

Entity Relationship Diagrams, or ERDs, are used to convey the entities within a system and the relationships between those entities. They are usually used to map databases and help IT personnel to manage those resources. Microsoft Visio is a diagramming application that makes use of vector graphics, which you can use to create an ERD for your database systems.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs" and "Microsoft Visio" to open the program.

    • 2

      Click "File" and "New Drawing."

    • 3

Click "File," "Shapes," "Visio Extras" and "Connectors." This opens the Search for Shapes dialog box.

    • 4

Click inside the Search for Shapes box. Type "Entity" and click the arrow key to start the search. This displays the entity relationship shapes. Click and drag "Entity 2" onto the blank page.

    • 5

Click "Ctrl" and "C" together, then right-click the page and click "Paste" to paste another entity relationship shape onto the blank page. Repeat this step until you have the number of shapes you need.

    • 6

Position the shapes horizontally. Click the "Connectors" beneath the Shapes dialog box to choose a connector. Click and drag the "Dynamic Connector" between the shapes.

    • 7

Arrange the connectors so that the left end is touching the right end of a shape and the right side is touching the left side of another shape.

    • 8

Double-click each shape to enter the text of your choice.

    • 9

Click "File" and "Save As." Name your file and click "Save" when you are done creating your ERD.
