How to Make Songs Fade Out in "GarageBand"

GarageBand is an audio recording and editing application developed by Apple for Macintosh computers. Apple promotes GarageBand as the “complete music studio on your computer.” You can use this program to learn to play a guitar or piano; record music and voice tracks to create songs, podcasts or ringtones; and edit and mix your music or podcast project. Making a song fade out in GarageBand falls under the heading of an editing operation, which is very simple to perform. GarageBand allows you to manipulate the volume level setting for any point in the song with ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the GarageBand application. Click “Open an Existing File” then browse to the directory location where the project for the song you want to edit is located. Select the project file. Click “Open.”

Or, if the song you want to edit needs to be imported into GarageBand, click “New Project.” Select your preferred project type. Click “Choose.” Click the two-toned blue, rectangle-shaped smiling face in the dock located along the bottom of the screen (this is the "Finder" icon). Browse to the directory location where the song you want to edit is located. Drag the song file you want to edit from the Finder window to an empty area below the existing empty track in the GarageBand window. The song will be imported into a new track in GarageBand.

    • 2

Click the downward pointing arrow (called the “disclosure triangle”) in the song’s track header to display the track volume graph.

    • 3

Click on the dark blue line, along the top of the track volume graph, at the point where you want the song to begin fading out. A control point will be plotted on the line. Insert another control point at the very end of the song.

    • 4

Click and hold the end control point. Drag this control point down. The end of the track volume graph should now look like a back slash, indicating the song is fading out.

    • 5

Play the song to verify that the song is fading out as you want it to.
