Tight budgets and limited time can make finding a pre-made princess party costume difficult and costly, but coming up with a quick, inexpensive version is easy with creativity and some do-it-yourself touches. Perfect for both adults and children, a princess costume lets every girl express her inner royalty. If you are gluing any parts of your costume, pack several safety pins and a small vial of quick-drying glue in your purse for any emergency repairs.

Scout thrift stores and consignment shops for old formal dresses. Bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, choir performance gowns and cocktail dresses can form the base of a princess costume, as can satin nightgowns -- when layered over a camisole and half-slip for modesty. Your closet and those of your friends and family can also yield a princess-perfect outfit; long full skirts and silky blouses can be customized with lace, sequins and other fancy embellishments for a party costume with a royal flair. For a children's princess party costume, look for old holiday dresses or costumes from past years that can be remodeled into a princess costume.

Customize your gown with royalty-inspired touches. Loop swaths of tulle around the skirt and hold them in place with several quick stitches or dabs of hot glue, adding dimension and volume to your gown. A length of satin can become a sash or a shawl, depending on the weather; fasten both options with a sparkly brooch. Trim long skirts with swirls of sequin tape glued in place around the hem, and accessorize blouses with lace stitching on the cuffs and around the neck. Glue faux rhinestones around the skirt for a dose of sparkle, and apply glitter fabric spray to the entire garment for a dazzling effect.

Complete your princess party costume with fitting royal accessories. A crown is the ultimate accessory for any party princess; if one isn't available to you, purchase a hard plastic headband and place it on top of a sheet of thick posterboard. Sketch a crown shape on the posterboard and use the arc of the top of the headband as the bottom of the crown. Cut out the cardboard crown and spray paint it with metallic gold or silver. Decorate the crown with glitter and faux jewels, then glue the bottom of the crown to the top of the headband to finish the crown. Other accessories for your princess party costume can include bejeweled necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings or elbow-length gloves and a scepter, all of which are available at many costume and party supply stores.
