How to Brush a Long-Haired Chihuahua

The long-haired Chihuahua's silky and fine hair is easy to brush.

All kinds of debris can hide in the coat of a long-haired Chihuahua. From seeds and leaves to ticks and bugs, an unbrushed coat can harbor menacing dirt and organisms that can cause other health problems. The long-haired Chihuahua's coat can vary greatly in length and texture but all long-haired Chihuahuas have matting and tangling in common. The silky hair can form knots and tangles that eventually form mattes that may have to be cut out. Matting can be avoided by daily brushing.

Things You'll Need

• Pin brush
• Fine-toothed comb
• Spray bottle
• Dog conditioner
• Medium bristle brush

Instructions

1. Brush the coat with a soft-tipped pin brush against the grain to remove shedding hair and debris.

2. Comb the hair from the root to the tips with the grain to remove tangles and knots. Spritz very tangled, almost-matted hair with dog conditioner and water mixture and separate the knots using your fingers before combing.

3. Brush the coat again with medium bristle brush with the grain to fluff and style the hair.

• Brush the dog after playing in grass or any place it can pick up debris.
