How to Determine a Guitar Neck's Width
The width of a guitar neck -- along with depth, radius and length -- is an important measurement to make when determining the dimensions of a guitar. Measurements of neck width are made on the top of the fretboard from one side of the neck to the other. Neck width is commonly measured at the nut, but for a more detailed measurement some guitar manufacturers also make width measurements at the last fret.

Remove the guitar's strings. Alternatively, leave the strings on if you can fit the straightedge ruler between the strings and the fretboard.

Place the ruler against the guitar nut. The nut is the strip of hard material with six grooves for each guitar string. It is located between the guitar's neck and headstock.

Move the end of the ruler where it is marked 0 to the edge of one side of the guitar neck. Read the number on the ruler where the opposite side of the guitar neck ends. Make sure you measure the width of the neck, and not the width of the guitar nut.

Make a measurement of the neck width at its widest point. Place the ruler against the last fret of the neck and note down the width. The last fret is the fret closest to the guitar's pickups or sound hole.
