How to Change GM Wires
On gasoline engines, including those manufactured by GM, the spark plug wires will need to be replaced on a regular basis to ensure a proper functioning of the ignition system. Weak or damaged spark plug wires can lead to rough starting or failure to start. Replacement of spark plug wires is a job that can be completed by the novice mechanic at home.

1
Park the vehicle and turn the engine off. Open the hood of the vehicle. If the vehicle has been driven in the past hour, allow ample time for the engine and wires to cool.
-
2
Locate the plug wires; the number of wires present corresponds with the vehicle cylinder count. For example, if the vehicle is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine, there will be 6 plugs and corresponding wires.

Open the replacement wires and remove them from their package. Most wires are labeled by length, but if not, lay them out on a flat surface in order of shortest to longest. Replace one wire at a time to ensure wires do not get crossed or mixed-up. Wires can be replaced by hand, or if preferred, a spark plug wire removal tool.

4
Pull on the first plug wire; grasp the wire by hand at the boot of the plug and pull. If using a removal tool, position the tool at the boot and tug the tool upward to pull the wire off the plug. Follow the wire to the distributor cap and disconnect it. The wire can now be removed from the vehicle.
-
5
Hold the old wire up to the replacement wire to ensure the size matches. Plug the replacement wire into the boot of the plug; you will hear a pop, this signals the wire has connected with the plug. Connect the opposite side into the distributor cap. Use your finger to plug the wire into the cap, pushing the wire firmly into place. Repeat these steps for each wire. Once finished, double-check each wire to ensure they are properly connected. Close the hood of the vehicle.
