How to Compare DNS Resolvers in the Wild

DNS resolvers are responsible for sending Internet users to websites. The domain name system (DNS) is used to designate the Web-based home for Web servers that host sites and applications. Each domain name, such as www.example.com, resolves to a unique IP address that's assigned to the Web servers that host the website. Instead of forcing users to enter in IP addresses to access sites, they can simply enter domain names. Comparing DNS resolvers can be done by performing a handful of network tests.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the network utility that's bundled with your operating system, available in Microsoft Windows' Control Panel and in Mac OS X as an application named Network Utility.

    • 2

Create a list of domain names that you wish to test. Keep in mind that they should not be hosted by the same company or be a part of the same website network -- or the test results may not be objective.

    • 3

Run a connection query to the domains and note the connection time for each query, which will be measured in milliseconds.

    • 4

Record the connection times and compare the query times of each DNS resolution that you made during your test.
