Instructions

    • 1

Cut a circle around the stem of a pumpkin with a sharp, serrated or specialty pumpkin-carving knife. Pull on the stem to remove the cut portion of the pumpkin. Cut off the hanging "guts" and set it aside; this will serve as the lid of the jack-o'-lantern.

    • 2

Use a large spoon to remove three-fourths of the guts from inside the pumpkin. Scrape the spoon against the walls of the pumpkin to create a smooth surface.

    • 3

Wipe off the surface of the pumpkin with a clean, dry cloth.

    • 4

Draw a face on the front of the pumpkin with a fine-tipped marker with dark ink. Draw a traditional jack-o'-lantern face. Alternatively, put a twist on it and cut out a large oval or circle for the mouth and long, rectangular slits for the eyes.

    • 5

Carve out the drawn features of the jack-o'-lantern's face, using a serrated knife or a pumpkin-carving knife.

    • 6

Remove the cutout sections of the pumpkin and discard them.

    • 7

Replace the lid on the pumpkin and set it on the surface upon which you wish to display it.

    • 8

Pull the remaining seeds and guts on the bottom of the pumpkin out of the mouth to create the look of vomit coming out of the jack-o'-lantern.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place a battery-operated or LED light inside the pumpkin to illuminate it.

  • Use caution while carving the pumpkin to avoid potential injuries.

  • Don't use a traditional candle that emits a flame to illuminate this pumpkin as it may catch the guts of the pumpkin on fire.
