How to Dress for a Red Carpet Event
Attending a red carpet event means that you will be at a high profile event where media is likely to be present. With photographers eagerly awaiting to capture guests' arrival, and especially women in their gowns, it is important to minimize the possibility of any fashion faux pas. Planning and preparing for the event, and coordinating outfits with your date for the evening, allows you to smile for the cameras and focus on having a good time.

1
Pick a dress and shoes at least two weeks before the event. Dressing for the red carpet requires a formal gown or sophisticated dress. Scour magazines and websites for dress ideas and pick a theme or look for the event. Your theme can be based on a color, such as glamorous red or chic black, or can be centered around a celebrity's style you admire. For example, if you prefer Audrey Hepburn's look, settle on a simple dress with clean cut lines.

2
Coordinate your red carpet look with your date for the evening. Once you have decided on what to wear to the event, discuss with your date what he is planning on wearing on the red carpet. While couples do not need to match, their styles should complement one another and not clash. In general, if your dress is flashy or bold, request that your date wear a basic, but well-tailored, suit. Do not run the risk of detracting from your look by failing to learn beforehand how your date will dress.

Make alterations and practice wearing your gown and shoes. Many women opt for gowns that they typically do not wear for nighttime events. As such, not only does the gown usually need to be tailored, but you need to practice moving, sitting and walking comfortably in the gown. Some gowns also require you to purchase special undergarments or double-sided skin tape. Likewise, shoes should be worn to ensure that they are broken in to prevent any slip and falls while walking the red carpet. On the day of the event, you should have no anxiety about what you are wearing.

Allow yourself at least three hours to get ready on the day of the event. Begin getting ready hours before the big event so that you do not feel rushed. When you arrive on the red carpet you want to be refreshed, relaxed and ready to face the paparazzi.

Tips & Warnings
Schedule a salon appointment the day of the event. Beforehand, bring a picture of your gown to your stylist, and decide how your hair will be done for the red carpet event. Failing to pay attention to your hairstyle can detract from your gown or overall look.
Some materials, when exposed to bright lights such as flashbulbs, become transparent. Stand in your gown in front of a mirror in a brightly lit room to ensure that your dress is not see-through.
