How to Add Python 2.7 to the Registry

Python is one of the most popular programming languages in use; according to the TIOBE Programming Community Index, the language ranks 8th out of all recognized programming languages as of August 2011. Although Python 3 is currently available, most applications are compatible with Python 2.7. Adding Python 2.7 to the registry will allow you to create programs in Python and associate the PY extension with the Python programming language in Windows. The Python website offers a Windows Installer that makes adding Python 2.7 to your computer easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," then right-click "Computer." Check "System Type" from beneath the "System" section to see whether a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system is installed to the PC.

    • 2

Go to the Python website, then click the "Download" button from the menu on the left.

    • 3

Select "Python 2.7.2 Windows Installer" for a 32-bit operating system or "Python 2.7.2 Windows X86-64 Installer" for a 64-bit operating system.

    • 4

Click "Run" or "Open" to launch setup for Python 2.7, or click "Save" or "Save As" to run the installer at a later time. Double-click the setup file when you are ready to install Python and add it to the registry.

    • 5

Select "Install for All Users" or "Install Just for Me," then click "Next." Use the default directory for Python 2.7, then click "Next."

    • 6

Follow the remaining onscreen prompts to finish the installation and add Python 2.7 to the registry. Restart your computer if prompted.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Python 2.7.2 Windows X86-64 installer is not compatible with Intel Itanium (IA-64).

  • 64-bit operating systems can run either the 64-bit or 32-bit version of the Python installer.
