How to Fix a Partition Table With GParted

GParted is a partition utility utilized on Linux-based systems, and installed by default in Ubuntu. GParted is open-source software and may be downloaded from gparted.sourceforge.net. You can fix a partition table, and create or edit partitions on hard drives and removable drives using Gparted. To fix the partition table using GParted, either edit the existing partitions, or create a new partition table and re-partition the drive or volume.

      Click the “System” option on the top taskbar in Ubuntu.

      Click “Administration,” then click the “GParted Partition Editor” option. The GParted interface opens and displays existing partitions on the connected drives.

      Right-click the partition to edit. Click the “Resize/Move” option to resize or relocate the selected partition. A pop-up window opens.

      Slide the edges of the rectangle inward to decrease the size of the partition, or slide outward to increase the size. Alternatively, type a new size in Megabytes (MB) into the “New Size (MiB)” input box.

      Type the number of MBs to precede and follow the partition into the corresponding input boxes.

      Click the “Resize/Move” option. The partition is resized.

      Right-click on a partition in the GParted interface and click “Manage Flags.” Check the checkbox in front of the desired “Flag” option. Choices are “boot,” “diag,” “hidden,” “lba,” “lvm,” “palo,” “prep” and “raid.” Click the “Close” button. The flag is set.

      Click on the “Partition” option on the top navigation bar and then click “Format To.” Click a file system option from the list and then click “OK.” The partition is formatted for the designated file system.

      Click the “Device” option on the top navigation bar, and then click “Create Partition Table” to create a new partition table on the drive or volume if you cannot fix the partition table with the preceding steps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Editing the partition table changing the format of the partition will delete all existing data. You can resize the partition without losing or overwriting data, however.
