How to Use Fusion Micro Links

How to Use Fusion Micro Links thumbnail
Micro links hide under your natural hair ... so no one needs to know.

Micro links are a fusion hair extension method. The links are rings of metal covered in silicone that grip your hair and the extension when they are clamped into place. This method does not use braids, heat or chemicals to bond the hair, because the links do all the work. The micro links are adjusted to accommodate hair growth by unclamping them and sliding them back up toward the scalp before reclamping. Extensions are removed by unclamping the links and taking out the hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry your hair. Hair must be clean and dry before micro links can be applied. Do not use any products to promote shine, since these make the hair slippery and keep the links from staying in place.

    • 2

Section your hair. Use a tail comb or your fingers to separate your hair, and clip the top sections up with a hair clip. Make sure the bottom section is at least 1 inch from the neckline, and the separation is straight across the top.

    • 3

Loop a small piece of hair into the hair threader. Slide at least one micro link onto the hair threader, then separate a small amount of hair from the rest. This section of hair should be about as thick as one hair extension strand, and both the extension and the hair section needs to fit in the micro link. Use your fingers or a tail comb to pull the hair section through the threader.

    • 4

Slide the micro link onto the hair, and pull the threader free. This makes the hair go through the micro link. Position the micro link about 1/2 inch, or slightly less, from the scalp. Do not push the micro link all the way to the scalp, since this can cause discomfort. Leave the 1/2 inch of space for comfort, and so you can feel your scalp even with the extensions in. This helps with shampooing and other hair care, after the extensions are installed.

    • 5

Slide the end of an I-tip hair extension into the micro link, and clamp it closed. Use the end of the extension that is adhered together. The loose end will fall free and look like natural hair. Use thin pliers to clamp the link. Special micro link pliers or jewelry pliers will work. Squeeze enough to clamp to link to the hair, but not too hard. Squeezing too hard will damage the hair inside the link.

    • 6

Repeat the process across the top of the hair section. You can add micro links to more sections. Be sure to leave the top of your head and around the sides extension-free, since this hair will camouflage the links. It takes about 100 links to do an installation on thin hair, or closer to 200 for thick hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use hair extensions and micro links that match your hair for a natural look. Use unusual colored extensions for excitement.

  • Micro links are also used for feathering -- extensions that use feathers instead of hair.
