How to Execute a Balestra When Fencing
Like the advance lunge, the purpose of the balestra is to close distance with your adversary. The balestra is also known as a "jump lunge."

Begin in the guard position.

Push off the floor vigorously, with both feet simultaneously, toward your adversary.

Land simultaneously on the balls of both feet, using the floor as though it were a springboard.

Lunge vigorously toward the opponent.

Tips & Warnings
The jump should be relatively small, carrying the feet forward no more than one shoe length and not far above the surface of the floor.
The legs should not straighten during the jump, but remain flexed, with the feet evenly spaced.
The jump and the lunge should be combined into a smooth, unbroken, fluid movement.

The Balestra can also makes a loud stomp (the landing on step 3) with the front foot, forcing a skittish opponent to commit to an action, often resulting in an opening. -
