Like the advance lunge, the purpose of the balestra is to close distance with your adversary. The balestra is also known as a "jump lunge."

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fencing Gear
Step1
Begin in the guard position.
Step2
Push off the floor vigorously, with both feet simultaneously, toward your adversary.
Step3
Land simultaneously on the balls of both feet, using the floor as though it were a springboard.
Step4
Lunge vigorously toward the opponent.

Tips & Warnings

  • The jump should be relatively small, carrying the feet forward no more than one shoe length and not far above the surface of the floor.
  • The legs should not straighten during the jump, but remain flexed, with the feet evenly spaced.
  • The jump and the lunge should be combined into a smooth, unbroken, fluid movement.
