How to Use Hair Dye on a Mustache
As men age, their facial hair can start to gray, sometimes before the rest of the hair. This can make men look older and cause self esteem issues. Some men have beards that grow in a completely different color than their hair. Both problems can be addressed by dyeing the facial hair to match the hair on the head. Because facial hair is very coarse it does not absorb the dye as well as regular hair. There are many dyes out there specifically for facial hair but a regular hair dye will work as well. Take years off your appearance by dyeing your mustache. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Skin protectant (Neutrogena Body Oil)
- Latex gloves
- Small comb
- Wet cloth
- Shampoo
- Moisturizer
Instructions

1
Choose a hair dye that closely matches the hair on your head.
-
2
Put on latex gloves and apply a protectant oil around your mustache area. Regular hair dye is stronger than facial dye and can irritate the skin.
-
-
3
Mix the dye together according to the instructions and apply it to your mustache with a small comb or your fingers. The dye will stain your skin so it is best to get as little on the skin as possible. A facial hair dye kit will come with a small brush for application.
-
4
Remove as much dye from the skin as possible with a wet cloth.
-
5
Read the instructions carefully. Add 10 minutes to the time recommended on the box. Because facial hair is much coarser, it will take longer to absorb the color.
-
6
Monitor the hair dye. You will see the mustache change colors and can gauge how long to keep the dye in by observing the color.
-
7
Wash the dye out thoroughly with warm water and shampoo.
-
8
Apply a moisturizing lotion to the skin to reduce irritation.

Tips & Warnings
Regular hair dye is much more permanent than facial hair dye and may turn out very dark.
The preferred method is to purchase a dye made especially for facial hair.
Consult a hair stylist if you prefer a more permanent dye.
Shave the mustache off and try again in a few weeks if the color doesn't turn out right.
Wash the dye off immediately if it starts to burn significantly.
