How to Install Molly Bolts in Drywall
A molly bolt is actually a bolt with a screw-head and a metal sleeve that presses into the wall. As you drive the bolt into the sleeve, it compresses the sleeve and expands the side-walls of the sleeve to grip the drywall. This allows you to hang heavy objects onto drywall without fear of the bolt pulling out. Use this type of bolt when a plastic wall anchor will not suffice and when a larger toggle bolt is too much for the weight. You should not surpass 50 lbs. of weight with a molly bolt. Place the item you wish to hang against the wall and position it level. Mark all of the mounting holes for the item onto the wall with a marker or pencil.

Measure the diameter of the metal sleeve along the solid portion at either end and select a drill bit that matches that size. Often the packaging that comes with the molly bolt tells you the correct pilot-hole size.

Drill a hole into the drywall with the correct drill bit size.

Tap the sleeve into the drywall. One end of the sleeve has a small lip around it. This is the end that protrudes from the wall and the end you tap with the hammer.

Place the item you wish to hang against the wall and line up the bolt holes with the molly bolts.

Thread the bolts supplied with the metal sleeves into the sleeves with a screwdriver to secure the item to the wall.
