How to Install Molly Bolts in Drywall
A molly bolt is actually a bolt with a screw-head and a metal sleeve that presses into the wall. As you drive the bolt into the sleeve, it compresses the sleeve and expands the side-walls of the sleeve to grip the drywall. This allows you to hang heavy objects onto drywall without fear of the bolt pulling out. Use this type of bolt when a plastic wall anchor will not suffice and when a larger toggle bolt is too much for the weight. You should not surpass 50 lbs. of weight with a molly bolt. 1
Place the item you wish to hang against the wall and position it level. Mark all of the mounting holes for the item onto the wall with a marker or pencil.
-
2
Measure the diameter of the metal sleeve along the solid portion at either end and select a drill bit that matches that size. Often the packaging that comes with the molly bolt tells you the correct pilot-hole size.

3
Drill a hole into the drywall with the correct drill bit size.
-
4
Tap the sleeve into the drywall. One end of the sleeve has a small lip around it. This is the end that protrudes from the wall and the end you tap with the hammer.
