How to Use a Hair Kimono

The hair kimono, a hair accessory created by the Hairagami Company, comes in a package of five, long clips. The hair kimono clips are similar to the classic "banana clips" that were popular in the '80s but are used to achieve a much smoother style. A hair kimono helps you create chic buns by folding the hair over the clips in different directions to create various shapes. Follow these steps to create the elegant hairstyle that is shown on the hair kimono package (see reference 1). Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your hair from your hairline to the back of your head. Keep the hair smooth against your head -- the way you would if you were about to put your hair in a ponytail.

    • 2

Separate your hair into five small sections from ear to ear using the comb. The middle section should be thicker than the other sections; the sections on either side of the middle section should be slightly thicker than the sections nearest your ears.

    • 3

Wrap the five sections in the ponytail holders. Position the ponytail holders about 2 inches above the base of the neck.

    • 4

Push the four side sections over your shoulder to keep them out of the way.

    • 5

Remove the ponytail holder from the middle section of hair, holding the hair so that it retains its ponytail shape and position.

    • 6

Open the largest of the hair kimono clips. Keeping the clip in a vertical position, pull the middle section of hair through the clip. Close the clip to fasten it.

    • 7

Spread out the hair that is sticking out through the hair kimono clip so that it is the same length as the clip vertically. Use a rolling motion to fold the hair over to the right, then tuck it in underneath the hair kimono clip. Leave some space inside the rolled hair so that it forms a long loop in the shape of a cylinder.

    • 8

Pin the hair in place underneath the hair kimono clip using the hairpins. Try to make the bun look as smooth as possible. The ends of the hair should not be visible. Spray the bun with hair spray for extra security.

    • 9

Repeat steps 4 through 6 with the remaining sections of hair. Use the smallest clips on the sections of hair closest to your ears. The final result should look like five, cylinder-shaped buns that increase in size from the ears to the middle.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use banana clips instead of the hair kimono clips to achieve a similar look.

  • Leave out some strands of hair near your face and curl them for a more romantic look.

  • Pin a flower or beautiful hair piece to the side of the bun to look even more elegant.
