A homemade dry shampoo can leave you with clean, beautiful hair.

Washing oily hair every day can do more harm than good. Even though shampoos for oily hair eliminate dirt, oil, perspiration and dead skin, they contain more detergent than formulas for non-only hair. Detergents can make your strands dull, dry, brittle and prone to breakage. Washing your hair daily also requires time-consuming drying and styling of your hair. To combat your oily hair without spending too much time, incorporate an occasional waterless cornstarch dusting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Comb through your hair to remove any knots and tangles. Part your hair in the middle so you have easy access to your scalp.

    • 2

Take a pinch of cornstarch in between your index finger and thumb and sprinkle it on your hair. Avoid applying cornstarch to the ends of your hair; aim to apply the powder as close as you can to the scalp, because this is where most oil is generated.

    • 3

Distribute the cornstarch through the greasy parts of your hair with a brush or fine-tooth comb. Check to see that all grease and oil is absorbed. Apply more cornstarch if needed, but try to use as little as possible because overusing cornstarch can result in very dry, white hair.

    • 4

Apply 3 to 4 drops of vitamin E oil to your hands. Run your hands through your hair. The oil will eliminate any dryness and frizz caused by the cornstarch.

    • 5

Incorporate the cornstarch dusting into your normal hair washing routine; instead of washing your hair daily, wash it two to three times per week and use your homemade dry shampoo remedy on days you don't wash your hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fill cornstarch into a shaker bottle for easy application to your hair.

  • Apply the cornstarch to your hair over the sink or lay down a towel, because the white powder can be messy.

  • Use cornmeal or cornflower if you don't have cornstarch on hand.
