Wait for a nice day to do this project. You don't want to be up on your roof wrestling reindeer in a snowstorm.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Christmas Displays
  • Potassium Chloride-based Lawn Fertilizers
  • Washing Machines
  • Hot Cocoa
  • 2-by-4 Boards
  • Sandbags
  • Saws
  • Electric Screwdrivers
  • Wood Screws
Step1
Decide where you want each piece of your display to stand. You may want to draw a sketch to take up on the roof with you.
Step2
Get some 2-by-4s ' scraps are fine. Cut them down to 18-inch lengths.
Step3
Determine the pitch of the roof. (See "How to Determine the Pitch of Your Roof," under Related eHows.)
Step4
Fasten one piece of wood vertically to the center back of a display by running a 2-inch wood screw from the front of the display to the back and into the board. The bottom of this display support should be even with the bottom of the display.
Step5
Repeat this every 24 inches or so on the back of every display. Too much is better than not enough.
Step6
Make an L shape with a second board, but not at a 90-degree angle. Instead, match the angle to the pitch of the roof so that when the display is on the roof, it will be standing straight up and down. The board should be wide-side down, not on its edge.
Step7
Run a 4-inch wood screw from the front of the display through the display support and into the bottom leg of the L.
Step8
Take the displays and a sandbag for every support up on the roof with you.
Step9
Set each display in place and hold it there with a sandbag over each lower support board.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use washers on the front of the display so that the screws don't pull through.
  • Make sure the roof isn't too icy to stand on. Sprinkle some potassium chloride-based fertilizer on the roof (or rock salt if there are no plants below) and let the ice melt a little.
  • Wear sensible shoes!
