How to Patch a Teddy Bear

Where a well-loved Teddy's concerned, a little preventive surgery can make him almost as good as new.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Curved Needles
  • Fabrics
  • Thimbles
  • Threads
  1. Step 1

Assess Teddy's situation. Does he have little holes in seams that join still-solid pieces of fabric? Or does he have big patches where the fur has come off and the weave and texture are disintegrating.

  2. Step 2

Make a plan. Gather thread, sturdy fabric (matching or contrasting) for patching, and anything else you need (pink felt for a new tongue, an extra eyeball if you need one).

  3. Step 3

Sew up everything you can without patching: reattach ears and eyes; attach a new tongue; re-embroider his nose; re-sew seams.

  4. Step 4

Cut patches (make them fairly big - you'll want to hem them so they don't fray, and they should cover the hole or bare spot and then some) and narrow-hem them (see Tips).

  5. Step 5

Use a curved needle and thread to sew patches on.

Tips & Warnings
  • To narrow-hem a patch: Fold all edges in 1/4 inch and press. Fold another 1/4 inch and press again. Then machine-stitch around all edges.
  • Choose your patching fabric to match Teddy's personality - or yours.
  • If Teddy's worn all over and you want to avoid an expensive makeover, make or get him some clothes - a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of overalls with long pants will look cute and prevent further wear and tear.
  • If Teddy's really hurting and you - or someone else - can't live without him, consider taking him to a professional. Teddies can be unstuffed, turned inside out, lined, and refurbished - completely made new - but it's not easy.
