How to File for Social Security

To apply for Social Security benefits you need to show proof of age, citizenship and identity. The Social Security Administration's Web site has information online, including a list of offices near you.

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Apply for Social Security benefits three months before you want to receive them.
Step2
Understand that you can begin to receive your benefits at age 62, but they will be paid at a reduced level until age 65.
Step3
Call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 or visit your local office for an application.
Step4
Complete the application and ask office personnel for assistance if there is something you don't understand.
Step5
Take originals or a certfied copied of your Social Security card, birth certificate, W-2 form or self-employment tax return and proof of citizenship. If you apply by mail, you will need to mail these forms with your application. Ask for the return of any originals.
Step6
Take the name of your bank and account number with you so that your benefits can be directly deposited.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are under 65, you may earn up to $10,080 in wages or self-employment income without having to repay Social Security benefits you received. If you are over 65, there is no earnings limit.

on 11/22/2005 Understand that you can begin to receive your benefits at age 62. But, you will be paid at a reduced level unless you wait to begin benefits at your full retirement age. Depending on your date of birth, your full retirement age may be 65 or older.

To find your full retirement age, go to: www.socialsecurity.gov/retirechartred.htm.
You can also file a Retirement application online at: www.socialsecurity.gov
Or call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213, or visit your local office for an application.
Once you reach full retirement age (65 and 6 months in 2005), there is no limit on the amount you can earn while collecting Social Security benefits. Before your full retirement age, your payments may be reduced depending on the amount you earn.
