How to Make a Graffiti Canvas
Even novice painters can undertake graffiti-on-canvas projects because there are few restrictions on how an artist should execute painting graffiti imagery. It is fundamentally free-style, which leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation. That is not to say graffiti is easy or lacks guidelines altogether. Graffiti artists typically execute the style free-hand, with spray paint in vivid colors and fluid shapes. Replicating these qualities is the key to successful graffiti artwork.

1
Cover your work surface with newspaper.
-
2
Lay the canvas face up on the newspaper. Shake the paint cans or markers to prepare the paint for application, according to the paint manufacturer's instructions.
-
-
3
Apply a base coat of paint as a background color if you do not want a white background. Paint the canvas gray or brick red to replicate traditional graffiti backgrounds.
-
4
Spray or draw the paint in long, fluid, curved strokes. Test your strokes on the newspaper before applying them to the canvas.
-
5
Concentrate on creating fonts more than other images. Graffiti does include images and symbols, but the heart of graffiti art is always font.
-
6
Layer the painted images. Allow a layer of paint to dry before applying successive layers if you are concerned about paint bleeding. Most spray paints dry within minutes.
-
7
Switch colors and patterns frequently to create a vibrant arrangement of colors and textures. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
