How to Get Blonde Streaks in Brown Hair at Home

Highlights can make your hair stylish and add contrast.

A few blonde streaks in your brown hair can make a dramatic statement, or just give a sun-kissed look, depending on your application. Highlights can take years off your appearance, and give depth and contrast to your hair, but it is very expensive to have highlights done in a salon. You can highlight your hair yourself, using a home kit. For light brown hair, your most natural results will come from a dark blonde kit; darker brown hair will look best with golden highlights. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Follow kit directions and do the strand test to be certain you are not allergic to the hair color. Prepare foil strips 4 inches wide, and long enough to completely surround a strand of your hair.

    • 2

Gather all supplies, and cover yourself with an old towel pinned at the neck. Put on the gloves that came in the kit, and mix the dye according to package directions.

    • 3

Clip up the hair on the top of your head, directing it away from your face.

    • 4

Comb out a thin section of hair from your right temple. If you want a bold look, go with a 1/2-inch section of hair. For a more natural appearance, a 1/4-inch-thick section is best.

    • 5

Slip a rectangle of aluminum foil under the section of hair, all the way up to your scalp. Use the kit applicator to saturate the section of hair with dye, and then fold the aluminum foil around the section.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 on a section of hair at your left temple.

    • 7

Remove the clip from the crown of your head. Spread out three fingers on your left hand, and lay them against the left side of your head. The spot where each finger touches is where you should add a highlight. Follow the process in Steps 4 and 5 to add three highlights on the left side.

    • 8

Spread three fingers on your right hand, place against the right side of your head, and add highlights where those three fingers touch.

    • 9

Lift a section of hair in the back of your head, and place a highlight there. This is the most challenging part of the application process, and you might need an assistant.

    • 10

Set your timer for the activation time given on the highlighting kit. When the timer goes off, remove all foils from your hair, rinse well, and then wash and condition with products made for color-treated hair. Style as usual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow instructions on the highlighting kit carefully. Do not leave color on longer than recommended. This can damage your hair.

  • If you have very dark hair, and want very light blonde highlights, you should visit a salon and have a professional do your highlights. Drastic color changes are difficult to do at home.
