Familiarize yourself with Gmail by taking a Google tutorial. Google offers an interactive tutorial for beginners who wish to learn how to use their gmail features. Visit the Gmail site, and click on various areas of the screen. Text appears informing users how to use functions such as Gmail archive, reporting spam, how to delete and move emails, how to label emails which is similar to a folder function. Users can also explore using Gmail Chat and learn how to compose mail.

Use a subscription site such as Lynda.com or Atomic Learning to familiarize yourself with the Gmail functions. Lynda.com's online training covers composing and sending messages, managing attachments, searching for messages, archiving versus deleting an email and changing the Gmail theme. More advanced topics cover managing contacts, sending and receiving chat messages, customizing and organizing your inbox and navigating through Gmail's help feature. Some of the training videos covering Gmail are free to users; however, most of them require some type of paid subscription. As of August 2011, monthly subscriptions begin at $25.
