Instructions

    • 1

Crush up two walnut hulls using a mortar and pestle and then place the shells into a plastic container.

    • 2

Cover the crushed shells with a bit of boiling water and then add a pinch of salt to the mixture. Set the mixture aside and let the shells soak for about three days.

    • 3

Add three cups of boiling water to the container after the shells have soaked for three days. Allow the shells to simmer in the liquid for five hours.

    • 4

Put on a pair of gloves and strain the walnut shells out of the liquid -- the walnut mixture is quite dark and will stain your hands, so avoid getting it on your skin.

    • 5

Boil the remaining liquid in a pot until it has reached half its original volume. Then, add a teaspoon of allspice to complete the dye. The allspice will give the dye a rich mahogany color that blends well with the dark base.

    • 6

Place the mixture back into its plastic container and let it sit for about a week before you use it. Periodically shake the container to keep the dye well-mixed.
