How to Measure a Tennis Racquet Handle

Measuring a tennis racket handle will determine whether it is the right size for your grip.

A tennis player's racquet is like an extension of himself out on the court and, as such, should be a proper fit for his body type and style of play. Overall length, head frame size, weight and grip diameter all need to be considered when choosing a tennis racquet. Tennis racquets come in a standard length of between 27 and 29 inches. Measuring your tennis racquet's handle should be done by measuring lengthwise and by diameter.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the handle from the butt end to where the throat (the open "V" section of the racquet) begins. This will give you the length of the handle.

    • 2

Wrap the measuring tape around a certain spot on the handle near the middle of the grip area. Note the measurement, which will range between 4 and 4.75 inches in diameter.

    • 3

Visit your local tennis pro shop to discuss your game with a professional; they will help you decide if you have the right racquet for your game and make suggestions for possible alternatives. Purchase grip tape to thicken your racquet grip area if it seems to be too thin.

Tips & Warnings

  • A tennis grip should be as large as you can comfortably grip the racquet. Smaller grip handles tend to make the player grip the racquet more tightly, leading to fatigue and possible injury if continued over a longer period of time. A looser grip on the handle is considered ideal.
