Instructions

    • 1

Practice positioning the hair highlights with a comb the night before. Place conditioner on the comb and streak it through your hair. Vary the width of the highlights from ¼" to ½" and vary the length of the highlights as well. This will help you determine the best placement for the highlights. In general, you will want around 9 to 11 streaks.

    • 2

Wash and dry your hair as normal. Part your hair in your normal position and style your hair as you normally would. However, do not apply any products to your hair. These can interfere with the dye and change the appearance of the streaks.

    • 3

Create a horizontal part about one or two inches down from the top of your head. Gather this hair into a hair clip and clip it out of the way. This will help you create face-framing highlights.

    • 4

Grab ¼" to ½" sections of hair. Place a foil sheet under the section. Apply the dye, then wrap the strand in foil. After completing the bottom section of the hair, let down the top layer of hair and create highlights evenly spread around your head.

    • 5

Leave the dye on the hair for between 10 and 30 minutes. The longer you leave the hair in the foil strips, the more intense the color. If you only want a small difference in color, leave the dye in closer to the 10 minute mark.

    • 6

Unwrap your hair, rinse the dye out with water and wash your hair with shampoo. Use a color-safe shampoo to prevent the dye from washing out entirely.
