How Do I Get a Background for My Dash on Tumblr?

Tumblr, a niche blogging platform, only offers one layout for the dashboard, which features a basic blue gradient background. While Tumblr gives you all the tools to change the layout of your personal Tumblr page, there is no setting for changing your dashboard style. Instead, you can use user-made scripts uploaded to the website Userstyles.org, which specializes is skins for popular websites. You can choose choose from the pre-made styles on Userstyles, or use the browser add-on Stylish to create a style that specifies your own background for your Tumblr dashboard.

Instructions

  1. Using Pre-Made User Styles

    • 1

Select a style that you want to install from Userstyles.org/styles/browse/tumblr. Every style displays an average rating, when it was last updated and how many times the style was installed this week.

    • 2

Click either the "Install as user script" or "Install with Stylish" on the style page. Click "OK" when prompted to approve the installation.

    • 3

Go to Tumblr to view your installed theme and ensure it works appropriately.

    Setting Your Own Background

    • 4

Install Stylish for either Firefox via the add-ons page, or Chrome via the Chrome Web Store (see Resources).

    • 5

Open Stylish in your browser. In Chrome, right-click the Stylish button on the Chrome toolbar and select "Options." If the Stylish button isn't present, go to "Chrome://extensions" and click the "Options" link under Stylish. In Firefox go to "Tools" > "Add-ons" and select "User Styles" from the add-on manager.

    • 6

Start a new style. In Firefox click "Write New Style." In Chrome click "Add Style" on the left sidebar. Create a name for your Style. In Chrome enter the code in "Code" box and click the "Specify" button beside "Applies to." Enter "http://www.tumblr.com." In Firefox, preface your code with two lines: "@namespace URL(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);" and "@-moz-document URL-prefix('http://www.tumblr.com/'){".

    • 7

Enter your background CSS. You will need to upload your background image to an external service, such as Photobucket or ImageShack. The CSS for adding a background is "body {background: URL('http://imageurl') repeat !important;}".

Save your style and enable it. Go to Tumblr to view your background and make sure that it displayed correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use Stylish and Userstyles.org to customize the skin of any website, not just Tumblr.

  • Writing a custom style in Stylish can extend to all elements of Tumblr, not just the background.

  • Using a custom skin does not change the code on Tumblr, but rather how your browser views the page. Custom styles only work in the browser where you have both Stylish and the custom style installed; if you log in to your Tumblr account on another computer the dashboard will display using Tumblr's default skin.

  • Custom styles can slow down your Tumblr load times, depending on your computer resources and complexity of the style.
