How to: Hand-Woven Bracelets

Give hand-woven bracelets as gifts.

Weaving is the process of interlacing strands of a flexible material to create a pattern. Store-bought woven bracelets can be costly but you can make your own at home for a fraction of the price. Use the same weaving technique used to braid hair to create a hand-woven bracelet. Use different colored cords if you like to add to the design. All of the materials required to make woven bracelets are available at craft stores or online retailers.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your wrist. Cut three pieces of cord, each four times the circumference of your wrist.

    • 2

Align the tops of the three strands. Tie a single knot around the top of the three strands.

    • 3

Cut a strip of duct tape and tape the strands onto your work space.

    • 4

Separate the three strands so they are positioned vertically parallel next to one another. Lift the strand on the left-hand side over the middle strand. Lift the strand on the right-hand side over the middle strand. Continue this technique until you have woven the desired length of bracelet.

    • 5

Tie a double knot around the bottom of the bracelet to hold the weave in place. Cut off any excess cord with the scissors, but leave enough loose so you can easily tie it around your wrists. Remove the duct tape from the top of the bracelet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pull each cord with the same amount of force to create a neat and even woven bracelet.

  • You can further customize your bracelet with beads.

  • Scissors should only be used under the supervision of a responsible adult.

  • Do not stick duct tape onto painted or antiqued surfaces.
