Set a network password to block Wi-Fi access.

If you encounter a slow Wi-Fi connection, chances are someone else has been using it excessively, including constant browsing, live streaming, online games and heavy downloads. If you share your Wi-Fi with your roommate, you can choose to block the connection if you experience these issues. The easiest way to do this is by password protecting your network. Your roommate will not be able to access the Wi-Fi without the password. This process will differ somewhat from one router manufacturer to another.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open your preferred Web browser.

    • 2

Type the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your router. For example, "http://192.168.1.1/" if you use a Linksys router.

    • 3

Log in to your router settings page by entering the user name and password you used when you set up your Wi-Fi connection.

    • 4

Click the "Wireless" tab. Certain routers may call it "Wi-Fi."

    • 5

Navigate to the "Wireless Security" section. Once again, this section may have a different name for different routers but usually includes the word "Security."

    • 6

Look for the "WEP" option. Click that option and type a password in the provided box. Retype the password if prompted.

    • 7

Click "Save" or "OK." Your roommate will now need the new password to access Wi-Fi.
