How to Get HM Surf in "Pearl"
Surf is an important skill required to progress through all traditional "Pokemon" games. It allows players to traverse large bodies of water and also proves effective in an offensive attack. Surf is available as an HM, or hidden machine. A hidden machine is a special ability that you can teach to select Pokemon. In "Pokemon: Pearl Version," Surf becomes accessible early on when you reach Celestic Town.

Walk, bike or fly to Celestic Town. Press the "Start" button and select "Map" to see your current location in relation to Celestic Town.

Go to the south section of the town and head down the stairs leading to the center of the valley.

Talk to the Galactic Grunt blocking the cave entrance and beat him in a quick battle. After defeating him, go inside the cave. Walk to the mural near the wall and press the "A" button to examine it. A lady will come in, tell you some things about the mural and give you HM 03 -- Surf.
