How to Be Independent From Parents as an Adult
The transition to adulthood is never easy. Since parents are often willing to help their children past adolescence, and staying in this family-provided comfort zone is tempting, it can be difficult to become independent from your parents and truly begin living as a self-sufficient adult. Living with your parents after college is sometimes a necessary alternative to living on your own. But gaining independence from your parents in a timely manner is important for living a full, successful adult life.

1
Make a life plan. Decide what goals you want to accomplish in five and 10 years, and what you want to accomplish in your life overall.
-
2
Set limits for how long you can live with your parents after high school or college, giving yourself a few months to find a job and save money. Do not overstay this limit.
-
-
3
Find a job. Begin at an entry-level job and work your way up.
-
4
Pay off your credit card debts and school loans. Spend your money wisely and save it as much as possible so that you can gain financial independence.
-
5
Find your own place to live as soon as you can afford to do so. Take responsibility for your own laundry, meals and other personal needs, even if you do live with your parents.
-
6
Be responsible for your own future. Don't let yourself get comfortable with your current situation instead of trying to be the best you can be.
-
7
Don't ask for help before trying to solve a problem yourself. Learn to be self-reliant rather than always turning to your parents.

Tips & Warnings
Don't be discouraged if your independence doesn't all fall perfectly into place right away. Getting a job and saving up money takes time, but a positive outlook and confidence that you can be an independent adult will take you a long way.
