How to Dye the Outside of a Leather Handbag

Dyeing an old leather handbag gives it a new lease of life.

Leather handbags are a popular accessory in women's fashion, but even the best quality leather fades over time. Fortunately, leather handbags can be reinvigorated by dyeing them. Dyeing leather is a simple process, but it does require planning to ensure the best results.

Things You'll Need

• Leather handbag
• Leather dye
• Brush
• Rubber gloves
• Soft cloths
• Leather deglazer
• Sealant

Instructions

1. Remove any dust or dirt from the surface of the handbag. If the handbag is damp after cleaning, wait for it to dry before you begin deglazing it.

2. Deglaze the handbag using the leather deglazer and a cloth. Make sure you are wearing the rubber gloves while doing this. Use as much deglazer as is necessary to remove any remaining oil or dirt from the handbag. The deglazer will also remove the original leather coating, allowing you to dye it.

3. Dip your brush into the leather dye and begin coating the handbag, using a sweeping motion. After you have finished an area of the handbag, use a cloth to wipe away any excess dye.

4. Allow the handbag to dry. Keep the wet dye from touching any surfaces as this will affect the dyeing process.

5. Apply another coat of dye to the handbag. Use the same process as Step 3, wiping away any excess dye. Pay close attention to any difficult to reach areas. Repeat this process until you are happy with the colorof the bag. Allow the bag to dry after your final coating.

6. Coat the handbag with the sealant using a cloth. This ensures that the dye won't run.
