How to Make Ancient Torches
From mosaics to written depictions, torches were a common part of everyday life in ancient times. Often the only form of lighting for people, torches could be used in brackets to light houses or carried to provide a transportable light. Creating this lighting is simple, and can easily be made at home either to resort to an ancient form of lighting or used in a play or period-decorated environment to simulate the lighting in ancient times.

1
Place the candle wax in the top part of the double boiler and 1 to 2 inches of water in the bottom. Set it on the stove at medium heat, to ensure that the water is heated to just below boiling.
-
2
Stir the wax constantly until it is completely melted. Drizzle it over a bunch (enough to fill a clenched fist) of twigs. Ensure that they are saturated with wax and tightly joined together.

3
Wrap unsoaked twigs around the soaked ones, ensuring that the entire outside is covered.
-
4
Bind the entire bottom, or lower half, of the torch together by wrapping the rope around it. Ensure that it is secured with a knot and tie off the excess.
-
5
Soak the cloth in the melted wax and wrap it around the top of the bound torch, securing it with a knot before the wax dries and holds it in place. Light it as you desire or use the torch for decoration.
