Like their human counterparts, dogs can get upset stomachs. Before attempting to help your dog feel better, it is essential to first ensure that the ailment is not serious. Dogs, especially large breeds, can suffer from bloat or gastric torsion -- a critical medical condition when the stomach gets twisted. It is also a medical emergency if your dog ingests a toxic substance such as antifreeze, gasoline or household cleaners. In such situations, a canine needs emergency medical attention from a veterinarian. Once you have determined your dog's stomach ailment is mild, you can take steps to help it.
Scan the area where your dog has been, and see if it has vomited or had loose stools. If you find any bodily fluids from your dog, check to see whether there is blood in it. Call your veterinarian immediately, if you find any blood.
Soothe a canine's upset stomach by pouring 2 cups of chamomile tea into its empty water dish. Warm chamomile tea can help settle an upset stomach.
Sit with your dog, to help it rest. Chances are, if your pooch has an upset stomach, it isn't moving around much anyway. But if it is, encourage your dog to lie down. This allows the chamomile tea to coat its stomach.
Replenish your dog's electrolytes, by giving it flavorless electrolyte-replacement liquids. This is especially important if your dog's stomach ailment causes vomiting or diarrhea, because the electrolytes help prevent dehydration. Call your veterinarian, and ask him the correct dose to give your dog, based on its weight.
Feed your dog plain yogurt that contains live acidophilus. Yogurt helps a dog's stomach keep a healthy balance of the good bacteria that encourages a well-functioning digestive system.
