How to Format a Narrative Paper
The purpose of any essay is to make an argument. With the narrative form, that argument is made by telling a story in order to appeal to the reader on a personal and emotional level. A narrative paper must have a clearly defined point of view, specific details, and precise descriptions.

1
Write the introduction. A narrative paper must have a purpose. Use the first paragraph or two to establish that purpose. Since the paper will take the form of a story, you should also use the introduction to establish the point of view and introduce the characters. While the argument is ultimately the most important part of a paper, it is also important that the reader identify with speaker and the characters.

2
Describe the central conflict. A narrative paper makes its argument to the reader by telling the story of the people involved. The conflict gives a sense of urgency and importance to the issue you are concerned with better than an abstract discussion.

3
Provide background for the people involved in the narrative. Emphasize the unique traits of the characters so they stand out from one another, but also include information that shows how much they have in common with ordinary individuals. The reader's sympathies are more wholly engaged if they can see themselves in the characters.

4
Describe the resolution of the conflict. This section of the paper will tell how the characters dealt with the problems presented by the conflict. Perhaps the conflict was never resolved. In this case, you can still provide a sense of resolution by describing a change in the attitudes and perceptions of the people involved, including the speaker.

5
Provide a conclusion. Remind the reader how this story relates to the broader issue that the paper is concerned with. The conclusion should make clear why this story reinforces the perspective introduced at the beginning of the paper. It may also include a call to action, telling the reader why this issue should matter to them and suggesting ways they could get involved.
