How to Get the Balance Owed on a Student Loan

The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) collects information concerning most student loans for each student who has attended, or is currently attending higher-education courses. The information obtained by the NSLDS includes Title IV fund data. Title IV funds are amounts authorized by the federal government for student aid and include federal student loans and grants. While you do not have to pay back grants, the NLSDS keeps track of your loan balances through frequent updates by your school or loan service provider.

Review your loan balances. The results include the principal amount still owed on each of your loans, as well as any interest charges. Any loan funds dispersed to your schools' office of financial aid are included in your NLSDS account information. Funds dispersed directly to you by private lenders may not be included with your NLSDS account data. To obtain balances from private lenders, contact the lender directly.
