How to Make Polyester Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are a fashion and a political statement. Dreadlocks made from a person's natural hair take up to 10 hours to create at a beauty salon and cannot be removed without shearing the hair at the scalp. Temporary dreadlocks can be created through the use of synthetic hair, such as polyester. Polyester dreadlocks lessen the amount of damage to the hair and require no maintenance. They can simply be taken out of the hair once the wearer decides to remove them. Polyester dreadlocks can be purchased or made at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Decide upon the color and length of extensions that will be purchased. Keep in mind that once the packages of hair extensions have been opened, they cannot be returned to the store. If choosing to purchase the hair from a local beauty supply store, bring a friend to help match the color. After the color has been determined, the next step is to figure out the length of dreadlocks desired. The polyester hair extensions should be twice as long as the desired dreadlock length.

Open the package and grab a small section of polyester synthetic hair that is 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. Fold the section of hair extensions in half one time. Put a rubber band over the loop created where the polyester hair folds. This will create a loop that will be used to attach the individual polyester extensions to the hair growing from the scalp.

Repeat the process of making individual sections of hair. Grab small sections of the synthetic hair, folding and placing rubber bands over the fold to create a loop. Continue creating individual sections until the amount needed to cover the entire head is made.

Each section of polyester synthetic hair now needs to be dreadlocked. This achieved by first putting wax on each section of hair. Twist each section of polyester synthetic hair around fingers.
