    1. What

      • The skin is composed of pores, which are made up of tiny glands called sebaceous glands, more commonly known as oil glands. The oil glands in your skin make an oil called sebum. Pimples are caused when the oil glands, due to overactive hormones, make too much sebum. The excess sebum mixed with dirt from everyday living; clog the oil glands causing small infections. As a result of these minor infections, pimples, blemishes or zits appear on the skin.

      How

      • Clogged pores sometimes close up and the infection stays underneath the skin, causing whiteheads. Blackheads are caused when the clogged pores open up, turning the skin a shade of brown. Other times, the body reacts to the infection differently, causing pimples, or bumps above the skin with puss-filled tops.

      Adult Acne

      • Adults suffering from acne can also attribute it to overactive hormones. Again, the oil glands are overproducing oil and becoming clogged and infected. Many times women suffer from acne the week before menstruation when their hormones are most active. Women should also be aware of the makeup they use, for many brands are known to clog pores which will result in constant breakouts. Stress can contribute to acne as well, because when stressed out, the body produces more sebum than usual.

      Precautions

      • Many think that they get acne breakouts because of greasy food or chocolate. This is false. Eating these foods do not contribute to breakouts. However, products used to style hair can cause acne of the forehead. Too much hairspray or gel can drip down, clogging the pores and creating acne. It is also important to remember to keep hands away from the face. Dirt and oils on the hands can be easily transferred to the face, again causing clogging and infection of the pores.

      Treatment

      • Before going to a dermatologist, try washing your face twice a day. Choose a face wash that agrees with your skin doesn't lead to a reaction When choosing a cleansing wash, you should ensure your face does not become red or irritated. Do not scrub the face with a washcloth, for it will make the acne peel and possibly scar. See your dermatologist for further assistance.
