- A wireless cable modem is an integral part in any home network that is connected to the Internet. The cable modem is the device that actually receives a signal from the Internet, which it then passes on to either a computer directly or to a router, depending on how many computers are connected to the network. The wireless cable modem also receives data from a computer, which it then sends back to various servers.
