Why Does My Hair Fall Out So Easily?

  1. Hair Loss Is Common

    • According to a recent article in the Washington Post, Americans spend more than $3 billion a year on hair-loss products. While widely consider to be part of the aging process, sometimes hair loss can signify a growing health problem. There is no official cure for hair loss, but identifying the cause and determine preventative and corrective treatments can considerably slow the progression of hair loss.

    Temporary Hair Loss

    • Temporary hair loss, commonly known as alopecia areata, is the most common type of hair loss in women. It can be caused by a shock to the body, either emotional or physical. The hair loss occurs because the roots of the hair become inactive. As hair falls out, new hair fails to grow. The problem usually corrects itself after a few months.

Some medical treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation treatments can cause hair loss, but they usually subside once treatment has stopped. If you are taking a regular medication, your doctor may ask that you stop for a few weeks to determine if the medication is causing hair loss.

    Permanent Hair Loss

    • Male or female pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is common. This type of hair loss usually affects the crown and sides of the head, combined with overall thinning of the hair. Complete baldness in women is rare. However, a family history of female baldness increases the risk of hair loss.

Skin conditions, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, can trigger another type of hair loss, alopecia areata. This occurs when when the scarring inside the hair follicle prevents new growth. For some people, additional blood tests may be required to find the cause of continued hair loss.
