Installing an Aluminum Window Awning
-
Preparation, Installing Top Brackets
-
Most aluminum awnings are placed above a window or just below a gutter, depending on the awning style and size. Installation begins with choosing the proper location and measuring the location of the top brackets. Top brackets are placed on each top corner. They are screwed through window trim into the exterior wall or the wall itself. Additional top brackets are sometimes installed along the top the window for extra support.
Stringer Units and Return Arms
-
The stringer units are connected to the top brackets. Stringers represent the length of the awning. The ends of the stringers fit into each top bracket and allowed to hang before the return arms are installed. Return arms are connected at the end of the stringer units. One end of the arm is connected to the wall, while the other joins the end of the stringer. With stringers attached to the return arms, the frame of the awning is created. A removable pin is sometimes used to join the stringers and return arms to allow the awning to retract when not in use.

Aluminum
-
Aluminum is placed between the stringers and connected at the top. It is stretched or rolled down the length of the frame and connected at the bottom and along the sides. The awning sides, if desired, are created with separate pieces of metal connected to the sides of the stringer and bottom of each return arm.
