How Are Crayola Markers Made?

Barrel Contruction

The first piece of a marker constructed is the barrel. It houses the marker's ink. The barrels are made of plastic resin, which is molded. This resin is also used to make end caps and plugs. Once the barrels are molded, a screenprinting machine is used to imprint the Crayola logo onto each marker. The empty barrels are then laid out on an assembly line.

Inserting the Ink

Reservoirs, which store the ink, are inserted into each marker. So that the ink doesn't spill out once it's inserted, end plugs are placed on the bottom of each barrel. Ink is then placed into each reservoir; one color of ink is used per marker. The marker tips, or nibs, are then placed on the top end of the markers. These tips absorb the ink, resulting in them being able to make actual marks when used.

Finishing Touches

So that the tips don't dry out, caps are placed on the top end of each marker. The color of the tip indicates the color of ink in the marker. The assembled markers are then sorted out, placed in containers or boxes, put in shipping boxes, and distributed to retailers.
