How Does Retin-A Micro Gel Work & What Does It Do?

  1. Definition

    • Retin-A Micro® is a new topical prescription treatment for acne, using the active ingredient tretinoin. Retin-A Micro is formulated to reduce the skin irritation commonly associated with tretinoin medications.

    How it Works

    • According to Ortho Dermatologists'™ Retin-A Micro website, Retin-A Micro uses a specially patented "Microsponge®" technique in which microscopic particles hold the active ingredient, tretinoin. These particles are made into a gel to apply to the skin. Once the particles are on your skin, they release the tretinoin slowly. When you wash your face, the particles are washed away. The slow release and easy removal of Retin-A Micro lower irritation.

    What it Does

    • While Retin-A Micro is on your skin, it penetrates pores to break up acne plugs. Then it pushes dead cells to the surface, where they can be washed away. It also keeps skin cells from sticking together, preventing future acne outbreaks.

    Results

    • Retin-A Micro, like other tretinoin products before it, is very effective in treating acne. Early in treatment, the action of the tretinoin penetrating your pores may lead to stinging, burning, a sensation of warmth, or reddened skin. In addition, your acne may appear to get worse in the first few weeks of treatment. This is because Retin-A Micro's first job is to push acne-causing plugs to the surface. Temporary worsening of acne symptoms is actually a sign that the Retin-A Micro is working! Most users have noticeably clearer skin within six weeks of beginning treatment. Because Retin-A Micro prevents acne, don't stop treatment when your acne appears to have been "cured."

    Safety and Precautions

    • Retin-A Micro's active ingredient, tretinoin, has safely treated acne for 30 years. However, overusing Retin-A Micro does not lead to faster or more effective treatment of symptoms, but it can lead to increased side effects. Use Retin-A Micro only as instructed by your doctor. You should not use harsh acne soaps or medications with Retin-A Micro, especially those containing benzoyl peroxide. Avoid using products that dry your skin, and always wear sunscreen when you're in the sun. If you have sunburn, do not apply Retin-A Micro over it. Stop use and contact your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
