Permanent mail forwarding starts with a customer advising the Post Office about a change of address. The customer fills out a change of address form, which is conveniently located online or at the local post office. The customer provides the old address and the new address to the post office, as well as the date the forward should start. When mail arrives for that address after the start date of the forward, the Post Office places this mail to the side instead of sending it out for delivery. The Post Office readdresses the mail by using a label with the new address. Then they mail it to the destination terminal where it is delivered to the new address. Since the mail must travel to the new destination, this process can take a couple of weeks. This process only applies to first class and some other types of mail (see Resources below).
Temporary Mail Forwarding
Temporary mail forwarding works similarly to permanent mail forwarding with the exception that the Post Office forwards the mail for a certain period. The customer must supply the old address, the new address, and the start and end date of the forward. The post office will flag the mail that comes during this period and reassign it on a piece-by-piece basis, as it arrives, to the new address. This service applies to first class and some other classes of mail. The Post Office will temporarily forward mail for up to 1 year.
Premium Forwarding Service
For a fee, the Post Office will forward all the mail that arrives for a customer. This includes first class, periodicals and standard mail. The customer fills out a form requesting premium forwarding service (see Resources below), advises of the start date and pays the fee. When mail arrives after the start date, the post office flags it for redelivery. Instead of sending the mail piece by piece as it arrives, the post office holds the mail until Wednesday. Every Wednesday, the post office packages all of the mail that has arrived for the customer into a priority envelope and ships it by priority mail to the new address. The benefit of this service is that the customer gets forwarded all mail as well as the fact that it gets to the new destination faster since priority mail service is used. This service usually delivers mail within 2 or 3 days.
