When to Change Wiper Blades
-
The best time to change your wiper blades is when the wipers leave streaks of water on your windshield after a wiper pass. These streaks usually appear along the edge of the blades or in the middle, of the windshield right in your field of view. This causes a safety issue and poor vision in the rain. A wiper blade usually will last years, but it depends on how well they are made and how well they fit your windshield.
Why Blades Need to be Changed
-
Wiper blades are made of a hardened rubber that fits into a groove on a metal blade. After many passes back and forth across the windshield the rubber begins to wear down and is slowly pulled out of the joint that holds it to the blade. This causes separation between the glass and the rubber blade, so the blade actually does not make contact with the glass anymore. That leaves streaks of water on the windshield.
How to Install Them
-
Wiper blades are easy to install. You simply press a clip on the middle of the blade, which releases the entire blade assembly from the windshield wiper arm. Then you repeat the process to install the new ones.
Which Ones to Choose
-
Choosing the right wiper blades is a little bit of an art. You do have to get the right size. Each windshield accepts a certain length of blade, because each one is a different length, and the blade arms are set at a different location. You can do this by measuring the length of the blades you already have. The next step is to choose a type of blade. Typically, Bosch makes one of the best blades. Anco makes a cheap blade that is high quality. RainX blades are good, but they do not work all types of windshields. It may take a few tries to find one that works for your car.
