What is a Japanese Thermal Straightener?
-
Japanese hair straightening, Japanese thermal straightening, Yuko straightening, or thermal reconditioning is a method of hair relaxing involving a hot iron and various chemical relaxants. Japanese thermal straighteners are a permanent straightening tool used by beauticians to straighten the hair. Even if the hair is wet, the hair will remain straight. The only way to get rid of straight hair after being treated with a Japanese thermal straightener is growing the hair out. The roots of the hair will grow in at their natural consistency. Japanese thermal straightening is more expensive but argued to be less damaging than traditional straightening. It takes approximately 4 to 8 hours to have a Japanese thermal straightening treatment.
How does a Japanese Thermal Straightener Work?
-
Many hair salons that offer Japanese thermal straightening claim that the heat and chemicals fuse to the hair, allowing proteins to bind to the hair as it is heated. This, however, is not proven to make hair stronger or in better condition, as hair salons claim. Clients who receive Japanese thermal straightening can experience hair breakage and brittleness close to that of a perm. Therefore, it is not proven that Japanese thermal straightening is any less damaging than any other permanent hairstyle. Although it is possible for color-treated hair to be straightened by way of Japanese thermal straightening, it is not recommended.

Warnings about Japanese Thermal Straighteners
-
Do not use a Japanese thermal straightener if you are not trained to do so. Only let a trained and licensed professional beautician or stylist treat your hair with a thermal straightener. Use the Japanese thermal straightener exactly as directed with the products recommended for use. If you experience a burning scalp, serious hair breakage, smell burning hair during the treatment, see hair falling out, blistering, or any other serious hair or scalp emergency, stop thermal straightening immediately. If you are experiencing scalp pain, see a doctor. Do an allergy test on your skin before using straightening chemicals on your hair.
