How Does Spray on Tan Work?
Spray Tanning Basics
-
Spray tanning is a sunless alternative to UV tanning, either outdoors or by tanning bed. Spray tanning does not contain any harmful UV rays and is simply a surface color sprayed evenly to make the skin appear tan. Spray tanning can be used on pre-tanned skin for a very natural look, or can be used on completely pale skin for a light to medium tanning effect. Most spray tans are made out of Dihydroxyacetone, which is a sunless-tanning agent that causes the skin to react. There are also sunless tanning lotions, gels and moist towelettes on the market, but spray tanning is generally accepted as the most even and natural-looking sunless tan available. Spray tanning can be performed in most tanning salons, and home kits are also available at the local drugstore or beauty supply store.

DHA, also known as Dihydroxyacetone, is an agent that causes the skin to react by increasing the melanin level in the skin. Only the upper layers of skin are exposed to this reaction, so the tan will only last as long as your upper layers of skin do. DHA, when applied, will cause a reaction with amino acids to increase the carotene on the skin. Because this is not the natural way melanin levels are increased on the skin, there is a chance the skin will turn orange with some complexions and some specific sprays. In addition, DHA will probably only last about a week at the most.
Spray Tanning Tips

It is recommended to exfoliate the entire body thoroughly beforehand, and if a person shaves her legs, she should shave them before getting a spray tan. The easiest way to get a spray tan to last its longest is to make sure the upper epidermis is smooth, even and new. The longer the upper epidermis lasts without flaking, exfoliating or peeling, the longer the spray tan will last. Using body cleansers with a balanced pH level can make your spray tan appear less orange. If your spray tan appears orange or streaky after applying, buy a pumice stone or a rough exfoliant and gently rub against the streaky or orange skin until the problem area fades.
