How Does a Slim Jim Work?

What Is a Slim Jim?
-
A slim jim is a tool that is used to open car-door locks without the use of a key. Slim jims are a thin piece of hardened steel 24 to 30 inches long and have a notch on both sides of the end. Slim jims are not used as frequently as they once were due to the designs of newer car models.
How It Works
-
If a car door is locked, a slim jim can come in handy. With the notched end down, the slim jim is slid between the window and the weather stripping on the lock side of the door. The slim jim is lowered to the lock mechanism and the notched end catches the control arm of the lock. The slim jim is raised up, lifting the lock rod of the lock and unlocking the vehicle.

The Dangers of Using a Slim Jim
-
While a slim jim works great on older car models, cars built after 1992 are structurally different and using a slim jim can damage the door locks along with other systems in the car. As modern vehicles have power windows and power locks, inserting a slim jim down through the door can damage the wiring systems, requiring a great deal of timely and costly repairs. Cars are built with tighter defense systems. There are barriers at the bottom of the windows that will not allow penetration and protect lock cylinders. Some cars have side air bags that can be damaged or deployed by the use of a slim jim. If you do decide to use a slim jim, use it on the passenger side of the vehicle as there are fewer control wires and mechanisms in that door. Always use caution. A slim jim should be the last resort.
