From Quick Guide: Nero Software Basics

    What is in it

  1. Nero is a media program primarily set up to burn discs, either CDs or DVDs. It has the options to burn data, audio or music, video, pictures or secure discs. It also has a label creator in most of the newer editions as well as software that can covert audio CDs to MP3s, record from tapes or records, or even export files to iPods or YouTube. This multimedia program can be downloaded directly from the Internet or bought at a store and installed with an installation CD.
  2. Types of Applications

  3. With any of the burning processes, the setup is basically the same. First the type of media is selected--either CD or DVD--then the type of information such as data, music, audio or picture is selected before adding the information to the create list. After this, each of these types will differ slightly based on the type of project you are working on.

Data only is the easiest of all the options. Once all of the information is selected, you would select the "Burn" option. The pop-up screen will appear where you can select the burner you wish to use, the write speed you would like to burn at, and then the "OK" button to begin the process. There is one additional step if you wish your data disc to be a secure disc. Nero has this additional feature where you are able to add a password that has to be entered in order to view the contents of the disc. It is generally on the left side of the menu as an option that can be checked, and with it checked a pop-up screen will come up asking you to create a password that has to be entered. This information will then be encrypted into the disc during the burning process.

An audio disc is also relatively straightforward in its setup. The audio tracks are either added to create a music disc that can be played in regular players, or an mp3 disc can be created to play in computers or mp3 players. The tracks are added, and then the "Burn" option is selected. At the end of the burning process, the program will ask if you would like to create a label. If you select yes, Nero then has a program that will launch where graphic labels can be created for your disc.

The video or DVD option starts out as the same process as the music disc. The major difference is, there are more options that can be added if you want. You can add chapters and menus, and link several different videos together such as a home video. Once all options have been selected, it then allows you to choose to burn it and create a label.
The picture disc is along the same lines, except instead of being more of a data disc, it goes toward being more of a video. It allows you to order your photos into a slideshow, add extra effects similar to PowerPoint, and add music and text.
  4. Extras

  5. The extra options in Nero are the options of converting music or audio files and exporting your work to other places such as YouTube or iPods, not just burning the disc. Nero has created a program that is compatible with these other sources and does the coding for you to easily change the format of your information to match and smoothly make the transition to these other applications.

Nero has a large amount of applications built into its newest programs and with a little practice, each part of the program will become easier to use. Nero also has a great website for tutorials and support help if you get stuck or need to see it done by someone else first.
