How Does Mononucleosis Spread?
  1. Fluids from Ears, Nose and Throat

    • Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which resides in the ears, nose and throat. It is spread by contact with any infected fluids from these areas, such as saliva, mucus, and tears. The virus can be spread by sharing eating utensils, sharing drinking glasses, and the most famous example, kissing. However, this does not mean a quick kiss on the lips. Saliva must be exchanged during the kiss to spread the virus.

    Carriers of the Epstein-Barr Virus

    • Some people contract the virus but never have any symptoms. The virus remains dormant and activates from time to time. During reactivation, these people still never display symptoms of the infection. However, during these times, these carriers of the virus can still spread it to others. In the same token, people who have had the disease can still spread the virus months after recovery and sometimes throughout the rest of their lives.

Slight Risk of Spreading Through Blood

    • Although it is very rare, the virus can spread through blood products, such as blood transfusions. People who know they are infected with mononucleosis should not donate blood.
